Depth Of Field - Before or After?
Since switching to a digital slr I wonder if it's necessary to tightly control depth of field before shooting. Graphic software such as Adobe products allow total control over which areas can be softened while enhancing the focus on areas of interest. I submit the example below for your scrutiny.

After but ...the fringing around the bird is a bit distracting IMO. Bird stands out much more in the second shot

Don't like the fence in the first nor the loss of the edge of the bird in the second but I'm female so allowed to be difficult.

That's a cracking shot before and after. I slightly prefer the first one I think but the bird stands out on both of them wonderfully

DoF should be "made" with the picture, not with post processing.

Many professionals create a dof effect in PP nowadays Manguish. It's easier to add dof in PP than it is to take it away from the original picture (in fact it's not possible).

If done subtly then it can work. However, in my opinion it looks way better taken, not processed.
If you want the DoF, then set the shot for it. If you don't then adjust accordingly.
It all depends on the type of shot.
