Still shots

I find it So much easier to capture action shots as I have a good idea of how to set them up and I am either quick enough or (in most cases!) not!!
However, today I tried to set Siren up for a portrait type thing (so technical), conditions weren't great - I was in a hurry and the sun suddenly decided to come out (Ok - will stop the excuses now!)

What angles would have been best? - Oh it was windy as well, which didn't help! - I have never really though my way through a photograph before I just have the camera and snap....suddenly didn't know where to start.

Please help!!

Re: Still shots

Sorry I'm no help as I'm no expert but I like the second shot, well like them all but for some reason slightly prefer that one. Lovely dog by the way!

Thanks - I prefered the 2nd shot as well - I think its something to do with her face being more open (if that makes sense)

Nice shots

The lights are blown in all three
I would try to get down to eye level or, go higher up than those pics to find a nice sweet spot for your dog
Try not to chop any of the dog - give it more breathing space in the composition

Re: Still shots

In addition to what Azz says, with which I fully agree, Iīd also use different lens. This seems a bit like you used wide-angle, and it makes the front legs of the dog short and the whole dog is a bit distorted by it.
Iīd use telephoto lens from distance about 3-4 metres, zoom all the way on the dog, not crop anything, shoot from eye level of the dog (yes, that means you have to lay down on the grass too ). Then you will get nice blurred background, nothing will be distorted.
But yes, the pics are a bit overexposed too, but thatīs more technical matter.

Oh and one last thing - if you mean to show nicely the show prize, then it would have been better if the dog was sitting

Re: Still shots

Opps, now I see that you have compact, then of course you canīt change lens! Silly me, should have checked first.
Anyways, I guess even the compact has a zoom, and then rest of my advice remains the same.

Re: Still shots

Thanks Mirka - I was kneeling down for these - as I said - I was in major hurry - just told her to sit - she lay down! - then she picked up the rosette - what do they say about kids and animals....!!!
I think she knew I was in a hurry and didn't want to play, just been out in the garden today and had a play about - not much better really - will keep practising!
