Cash (mix breed puppy)

A few pics taken today, just snaps really, he is doing good, had quite a few health setbacks, but think we are on the home straight now

Re: Cash (mix breed puppy)

Thanks, he does have an expressive face, he's a smart little cookie too. My fave is the first one, as that's what I see when ever I look down

Re: Cash (mix breed puppy)

Thank you, I think he's a stunner too, but I am totally biased

He's had some real problems with his skin, which is why I haven't posted many pics of him, as it's not been nice. Before Christmas he was bald really from the rib cage down, and red raw and in a lot of discomfort. He had demodectic mange, which was git to clear up, and that left a skin infection, but once that started to clear it became obvious something else was wrong, and he has severe skin allergies. He's allergic to chicken, all grains, and some pollens, he's on a daily regime for the foreseeable future of antibiotics, anti histamines, a skin/coat supplement, steroid jabs when it's really bad, and a food that contains bison/venison and no nasties that he is allergic too.
Before Christmas, we honestly discussed with the vet if it would be kinder to let him go, as it was heartbreaking seeing him in so much distress and discomfort when he's so young. The vet bills have been scary, as he has to have fortnightly check ups, skin scrapes etc, plus the meds and taking him to a specialist.

So, it's more a maintain and contain thing rather than a cure, he did manage to get into the cats food last week, so he has redness in his ears and paws from that at the moment, but a steroid jab stopped the worse of the itching.

He now has hair growing back on his back legs, and his ears have some hair, whereas before they were just grey skin. It's why I photograph him from this angle at the moment, as other angles you can see the patchiness

Bet you wished you never asked now

Re: Cash (mix breed puppy)

Aww that's kind, we'll do the best that we can for him, and hopefully we will keep on top of it, it doesn't help that he's a little pig and is forever on food seeking missions It's a little daunting to think that we will always have to watch what he eats, touches etc, keep up with the meds and baths, lotions etc.
I scared the hell out of lady, that tried to feed him a few weeks ago in the park, and even after I explained, she was still saying a little won't hurt I am seriously considering getting him a bandana for walks, that says don't feed me.

Apart from all the health stuff, he's a cool little dog, and both of the bigger dogs have accepted him, and he is brilliant with the cats.

Re: Cash (mix breed puppy)

Have you tried a RAW diet? You can skip the chicken and feed red meats - there are some good threads on Dogsey with lots of info

Know what you mean about people - I used to say Rocky's on a grain free diet and they'd say one would be fine

Re: Cash (mix breed puppy)

RAW diet did it with Mack, and it didn't really help and he was so fussy, that once we switched to Taste of the Wild, he has kept his weight consistent and zero stomach issues, touch wood. The two adult dogs are on Taste of the Wild with meaty bones and chicken wings.

RAW diet not very practical for Cash anyway, as he is limited at the moment to Lamb, Venison and Bison, No Chicken, Beef, Pork, Turkey, Eggs, Dairy, Yeast, any grains. He isn't allowed Fish either, as while it's great for some dogs with tummy problems, it can have the opposite on severely allergic dogs, as it contains histadine, which is the precursor for histamine. Plus, Lamb is very expensive here, and of course fresh bison and venison not the cheapest. So, with the cost of everything else each month for him (as none of his medication or products are covered by insurance) we will be sticking with his food.

So Cash has just his food, a lamb bone if we can find one, and antlers to chew on, so far we have found only one type of treat by Nature Balance Sweet potato and Lamb. Training treats are his regular food.

Cute little chap, I hope his health issues don't cause him too much discomfort.
