Re: Alcatraz (video)

It looks a fabulously interesting place. I was watching a serialised documentary about it a few weeks ago with Sam Neill in it...very strange Seriously though, why is the Governor's house in ruins? It looks more ancient monument than recent history...was there a fire or something?

Technically though you're using pan, tilt and zoom a bit quickly, and the video starts to become an amusement park white-knuckle ride If you pan onto a tall object, as you did, and then tilt to take it in, then tilt back again the effect is a bit disorientating. When I set out to video something like that I will spend maybe ten minutes planning the camera movements, the pan etc, and try not to tilt the camera at all in a panning shot. I also try to only pan in one direction, and only zoom at the beginning and end of a shot, possibly zooming out from a starting focal point, wide-angle slowly to the right, them zoom into focal point two and cut.

That said, though I've been shooting video since way back when it was Standard 8 and you had to reverse the film half way as it was in fact 16mm and double sided, I'm only an amateur, and this is only the opinion of an amateur.

Re: Alcatraz (video)

Thanks for the helpful tips Gaz. The reason why it is in ruins is because the steel in the concrete walls has rusted away with the sea air.

And what the advertising people don't show is the inside

What they do promote is inside the prison itself which is well maintained

Re: Alcatraz (video)

Gaz not really only been to China -Egypt and that part of the USA in recent years. Doing a med cruise this year and maybe a trip to Brazil as well to see my family over there. There are loads of places I would like to visit like Japan -see relatives in Australia - new Zealand to see the geezers etc - Canada for the Rockies- oh so many places yet to see.

Central heating engineer called and asked to see the old geeser ,so wife said I was working in the back garden.

Got loads of video/photos of Fishermans Wharf and Muir woods to see the redwood trees. The cable car rides are something else as well in San Fransicso.

Re: Alcatraz (video)

In which case you would love China, amazing place

Great wall unrepaired part

Repaired

Half way up to the wall in the cable car

China left of wall /Mongolia on right, (note access to wall with stone barrier )

And yes it was steep in some places and needed to rest every so often being several thousand feet up was getting hard to breath
