Rook & Starling

The Heron was back again for some more frogs today, so I got out my camera hoping for some better flight shots. I went for a coffee and he flew off but I managed to get a Rook in flight shot and Starling, which I'm quite pleased with.

Re: Rook & Starling

Brilliant.

There's a rookery in the woods at the bottom of our field / garden.

When it's wet in the winter they will sit on top of our chimney pots with their wings spread to dry themselves out from the heat rising from the coal / log fires.

I've often tried to photograph them looking all 'dishevelled' but with no success.
Kit 1

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Great Stuff DJ, as always!

Can I ask you...are you hand held or on a tripod for these shots?

Thanks Phil.
I think they are funny, I usually hear them before I see them (not that loud Raaaaaaaah rahhhhh) It's like they are talking to themselves with this quiet "Weeeeeeep and some clucking and other strange sounds

Thanks MD, these shots are all handheld using my 400mm f5.6,. I really only use my tripod for landscape shots.

Re: Rook & Starling

I thought that might be the case, but you always manage to capture every image with pin-point accuracy and little or no blurring from camera-shake. You must have a steady drinking hand, lol.

I normally shoot @ 6.5fps hi-speed mode with the 40d, and so , I normally get a few pin sharp. It depends on whether I use a1 servo or a1 focus mode, and if I choose the centre focus point or all of them. It can be a hit or a miss with either. I find the af on the 40d to be a bit better than on the 400d but its still not perfect. A steady hand helps as well
