Wales 2012 - Churches and Abbey

One of the 7 wonders of Wales according to the rhyme. The Steeple at St Giles in Wrexham which is not a steeple at all like the rhyme suggests, just the churches bell tower. It is however the tallest landmark in Wrexham.





It was actually pouring it down when we visited Wrexham, which made a lot of the pathways around the church hazardous and i could not get a good vantage point to take the images.

St Giles is also well known for its Grotesque Gargoyles. Sadly many of these Gargoyles have succumed to the weather.



Oh the poem goes :

Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon's mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St Winefride wells,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells.

Images 6,7,8 & 9 - Valle Crucis Abbey (Valley of the Cross) - Built in 1201 and disolved in 1537 where it fell into disrepair. Valle Crucis stands at the bottom of the beautiful Horseshoe Pass.

Another interesting set.

Always sad to see Gargoyles / Grotesques weather away over time.

Easier to shape but that's the problem with sandstone rather than granite I guess.

Thanks Very true Phil, sandstone was never the perfect material to use even though it was widely used on churches. This one was one of two i seen in fairly decent nick, many of the others had almost worn completely away.

Lovely setting for the last one.

It is situated in a lovely area, but there is a campsite next door which spoils the views a little bit

Number 2 and the last one for me, great stuff! Not been to North Wales since I was very young.
