I'm not normally a fan of HDR but I love this Steve, I think you have got all the elements spot on. The only slight nit for me is the thing sticking out of the ground in the foreground to the right, it keeps drawing my eye as I try to make out what it is.

Ken, it's a marker post, left it in on purpose for a balance to the right of the picture, but can see where you are coming from.
As for not liking HDR...This isn't, one shot processed to death in Lightroom and a tweak or 2 in PS, no HDR either multiple shot or faux.
