The Many Moods of St Marys Island

St Marys Island forms the center of my primary wildlife recording patch. Mainly bird and butterfly counts, but ive seen everything from dolphins seals and a whale, as well as several species of amphibian, and mammals at this site.

Its a photographers dream and an iconic north east landmark, and though i usually point my lens in the direction of the wildlife i still find time to take a few shots of the lighthouse.

At high tide the birds roost in large numbers, a scope is essential to look through the flocks.

Tide out and plenty visitors cross the causeway to visit the center, you can climb the lighthouse for a small fee, the chap on the left with the wheelbarrow lives in the red roofed cottage, he often collects seaweed and sea coal in his barrow. The cottage is up for sale at a tiny £250,000.

B&W conversion, takes me back to my early visits as a child on holiday in the 50`s and 60`s.

Story weather, always good news to a birder.

Early morning, and many toggers about often hard to get a shot without someone in the frame.

The reason i keep visiting the site, are the great range of birds.

Re: The Many Moods of St Marys Island

Thanks Dave, Shirley, Cakey, Laura and Richard, as has been pointed out its a Lapwing, locally known as a Peeweet, and sometimes called the Green Plover. I was down here today in pleasant spring sunshine looking for early retuning migrants.

cheers all.
