Night photography.

I am becoming increasingly aware of some beatiful scenes around me when I am walking home in the last tiny bit of natural light. Things I wouldn't normally look at seem quite transformed and I would like to be able to capture them but haven't the foggiest how to go about dealing with street light and neon signs to get the sort of moody images I am after and properly reproduce what I am seeing.

Any hints or tips would be gratefully recieved.

Re: Night photography.

I managed some really nice stuff with churches, floodlit etc - but it was trial and error and manual settings I'm afraid... can barely remember what I did. Would love to see what you come up with though

Re: Night photography.

I have not much experience of night-time photography but I think a lot of it is trial and error.

The last time I really had to do some was for a pub landlord who wanted some pictures of his pub, day & night. It was back in the film days and for the night ones I used a starburst Hoya square filter to give the external lighting that starry effect.

Quite effective and he was well pleased with the results.

NO!!, I am not going up in the loft to find the transparencies to scan

Re: Night photography.

I only tried it once, went to Kielder to try for star rotation, set every thing up and pressed the shutter, 30 mins later the shutter had not fired, so i packed up and set off home with the gear in the boot, about another 30 minutes later i head the shutter go off in the car boot.

I didnt have a clue, so ive never tried since, so good luck Daisy, but no advice from me

Re: Night photography.

Thanks everyone.

Everything I read says 'tripod' and since I am primarily after urban shots I am going to have to think out a decent security strategy. There are a lot of wierdo's in town/city centres after dark and if you set up a tripod and all your 'gubbins' well it leaves you a bit vulnerable.

Need to arrange a posse!

I'll keep you informed.
