Ponderings on pics and the future .

I was just thinking about Owen and Dave's lovely grandkid shots and it occured to me that this generation of kids are the first to grow up with every minute change in there lives documented for posterity.

When I was wee we had our 'photies' taken once a year at school and on special occasions. We saw big changes from year to year and kept these precious memories in a special box to be treasured.

With the rise of the i phone and other mobiles with half decent cameras always to hand hardly a picture is missed and these kids will grow up with a vast pictorial record of their childhood.

So, there is a point to this honestly, will they grow up to regard photography as an art form, a 'craft' if you will, or simply as an ongoing means of recording their daily existence?

and...does it matter?

Going to rest my brain now.

Marcus (who is 4) already has a childs camera. He takes snaps of everyone. Why? Because he Grandad does it

There will be even more pictures going around but they wife be like facebook snaps.
I'll think there will always be a place for the enthusiastic photographer.

or until the perfect camera comes out that take the perfect picture every time

Maybe your missing the point, we as you say now have the technology to record moments in time far easier than ever before. As regards photographing the family as they grow, the offspring can keep or dispose as they wish. Family records are no longer restricted to to annual school photo or the printed word as in birth-marriage-death certificates.

The question to consider is which would you prefer? being able to see, say your great great gandparents on video, or just get their names from the local registry office.

So in my opinion yes it does matter, what ever the reason to take photos/movies its recording future history as it happens

I don't think I am missing the point bazza, after all I was the one making it.

I am not coming down on one side or the other simply pondering on whether proliferation will make pics less 'special' to the next generation.

Thanks for posting.

Re: Ponderings on pics and the future .

I'm actually wondering now if what would have been in the past, a more memorable/treasured photo, is now more likely to become 'lost' deleted as one of the masses, whatever....but I think some kids will still grow up to enjoy photography, others won't but will still have certain pictures that mean more to them than others, some may not give a toss...so not much different then

I do think that sometimes kids/younger teens don't think much of a camera, have seen them damage their Blackberry phones, digital cameras, laptops when in the past "technology" was an expensive item to be looked after.

Anyway, think I'm on a pointless ramble, maybe I should stop now

Re: Ponderings on pics and the future .

I am amazed by the number of cameras now ,they are built into phones ,walkmans and even games ,Keona has two cameras, one camera phone ,an ipod touch with camera and a DSI with camera .

Ive my D300 ,a Kodak digi, an archos 101 ,a camera phone and a journey recorder in my motor that takes one picture per second .

its just technology going mad ,good or bad I dont know

Re: Ponderings on pics and the future .

I am trying to get my head around what having a photograph of me for every week or even day of my life would be like because that is now a real possibility for people. I guess I find it a little frightening and we'd certainly lose the opportunity for the bad haircut shots that amuse us so.

Like Cakey I have a silly amount of camera's to hand and while it is great never to miss an opportunity it does encourage people to snap away without actually learning what cameras are capable of.

I do wonder about the future. I suspect we will end up with a built in photographic chip someday.

Re: Ponderings on pics and the future .

Theres a shop in town and they advertise ' professional' photos, you often see young mums taking their kids in and having them in front of the white sheet, sat in a basket...and then the phones are out...

So I think in some ways people maybe feel that they have an opportunity to capture more moments but that it doesnt replace a "good photo" if you know what I mean.
