Which is your favourite lens?

I often find my self grabbing my FF body along with the 24-105L lens which is normally always attached to it. This is my favourite combo for general use.

Then I use my 1.3 crop camera with the 300L and either a 1.4x or 2x converter attached, mainly for air shows or motor sports.

Anyway this got me wondering, what lenses do other YOP's find them selves using most of the time and for what type of shooting.

Canon 100-400mm IS zoom, usually on the 40D. Great walk around combo, i occasionally add a 1x4 converter but lose AF.

Re: Which is your favourite lens?

Untill recently everything I did was wide landscapes with a tripod using small apertures so lens speed (large aperture) or indeed image stabilization / vibration reduction really wasn't required.

With that in mind I would say my favourite is the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Since recently getting into bird photography I would have to say that I really enjoy my Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens. Being f5.6 @ 400mm it might not be the fastest in the world but to get to f2.8 @ 400mm is just silly money and I'm more than happy to wait for good light as it's just a hobby. It's a really flexible lens that is ideal for just going out on a walk with, the IS is good and I'm always amazed at how often I use it for landscapes.

Like Mossy - I'll add a converter. I also loose AF on the 40D but with 1D series cameras you can retain AF up to f8 so it's a good combination when extra reach is needed.

Re: Which is your favourite lens?

My favourite lens is usually the one I did not bother putting in the bag because I did not anticipate using it.

In all honesty, I have not got a fav lens. It all depends on what I am taking images of at the time which determines what would be my fav lens at that moment

Re: Which is your favourite lens?

I only have 3, a kit lens, an 18-70 Nikkor, and my Tamron 70-300. I use the Tamron 99.9999% of the time, so for the rest of the time I bought a second D40 with the other 2 lenses just so I wouldn't need to take the Tamron off at all

Whatever you do don't get rid of that 18-70mm kit lens, I did and have regretted it ever since, so bought this (see next paragraph) to compensate.

Back to the question, my most used and favourite lens is the Nikon 24-120mm VR
f3.5-f5.6 G. Why? It for me covers most of the photographic range I generally work at.

Looks as if Ken does the same in the Canon range more or less.

Apart from that it then comes down to what I want to take photos of and that normally is one of my "faster" lenses.

Your right, for me the 24-105 is such a useful range, although generally a very sharp lens, it's not quite as sharp at the 24mm end. For that reason I would love to get the 17-40mm zoom when I have the funds.

Its going nowhere I used it to shoot a friends wedding [ they asked, I said I wasn't good enough, they insisted they wanted me, I finally agreed, happily it went well, phew, then they begged me to do their baby girls Christening so the wedding shots can't have been too bad ], anyhoo, it did really well considering its not a 'top notch pro choice'. I was very pleasantly surprised when I started playing with it, it's much better than I expected it would be, definitely a keeper
