Re: Dudley Castle

Hi Crumble.

Looks like a fantastic place.

You've a fair bit of noise creeping into the second shot as your ISO is set at 1600. If you were photographing birds or motorsport at fast shutter speeds then I could see why you would need the ISO that high.Even at f22 you could have used a much much slower shutter speed than 1/2000th sec without worrying about camera shake and kept your ISO right down.

The first is a lot cleaner at ISO800 and f11 but again 1/500th sec seems very fast.

If you're using your Aperture Priority setting for stationary subjects my tip would be to set the camera to ISO100 - select the aperture you want based on how much you want in focus - f11 is a good place to start. Look to see what shutter speed the camera is then giving you and only increase the ISO if the resulting shutter speed is too slow to hand hold. If you're using a tripod - just go with whatever shutter speed it gives you.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2

Re: Dudley Castle

i was trying to get the castle darker and bring out the sky, so i did that on purpose, only drawback as you say is a bit of noise which i can live with, and without a tripod i try to get the speed as fast as i can to avoid any blur etc.

In situations like that I always take two shots. One of the castle and one of the sky. I then merge them post processing.

It's rare I'm ever down that way these days. Although I grew up in Warrington I was born and spent my first few years in Coventry. My relatives are all down that way still though. Coventry, Nuneaton, Coleshill, Filongley
