The One That Got Away

You've undoubtedly heard legendary fishing stories of the one that got away. This morning I missed a photo gem that got away while joining my friends for our weekly McDonald's breakfast. One of my friends pointed out a fantastic sunrised so I grabbed my new camera and headed out for a couple of captures. It became quicly obvious my camera wasn't working properly and after two failures to get the d7000 to work properly I gave up and went back inside. I discovered after a few minutes of study that my options dial had been bumped to Shutter priority instead of my normal Aperature priority. In the 5 minutes it took me to correct the ssue that cool sky was long gone. I'll give you an example of the type of sky I missed.

Yes Azz I took that shot almost two years ago with my Nikon pocket S550. I was waiting for my BMW motorcycle dealership to open its door and spotted this gorgeous sky. As I've discovered this type of sky is very fleeting so you've got to be in the right place at the right yime to get it. The sky I missed yesterday was just as beautiful.

I can well imagine how frustrating that must have been Bob.

It happens to me almost on a monthly basis, I'll see a really wonderful transient photo opportunity as I go to work and for some reason it always happens the day I have no camera with me.

Re: The One That Got Away

I'm just the same.

Whenever I have no camera - I see potential wherever I look. I avoid Loch Ness like the plague if I've no camera LOL

I guess for somebody like me who doesn't carry a camera everywhere I go - I have to just accept that the law of averages dictates that I'm going to frustrated.

Going back to your original thread - I guess it's all the missed shots we have that makes getting a shot another day all the more special.

Re: The One That Got Away

I get my fair share of planned shots where I'll drive/ride hundreds of miles to photograph a famous scene. I've also missed some really special shots because:

1. My camera had no memory card
2. Something got bumped that prevents using my camera
3. There's no place on the road to pull over
4. I forgot to put my camera settings back where they belong, ie. exposure
compensation

I have nobody else to blame but myself for not checking these things or forming better habits.
