Obviously a very popular place for people to visit so waiting for that clear space moment may take ages on the pathway. Although I have to agree with Zounds, we don't know the circumstances you were work under or if there was any alternative shooting positions.
I was just thinking about how the final picture would have looked if you had taken another couple of shots to the left and stitched them together for a more panoramic view?
