Turkey Vultures

200mm doesn't go very far when pointing at high flying birds of prey, but at least from this distance the vultures do look quite attractive, and their wingspan is impressive.

Re: Turkey Vultures

Thanks, I do need a longer lens for bird pics here, I don't use my zoom enough to justify spending a lot of money though :/

Re: Turkey Vultures

Will go and check it out Fogey, thanks I have been thinking of a second hand Sigma 50-500mm , I don't use zooms that much, but would like a decent one, at a reasonable price that takes good pics, not asking for much??? Has to be able to handheld too, as I am not a lover of tripods, and don't use my monopod as much as I should.

Thanks Laura xx wanna sell your Sigma?

Re: Turkey Vultures

The biggest problem with lenses above 300mm is the weight. I have a Sigma 400mm lens and that is something of a beast, not only to take photographs with, but to cart around as well.

When I go out, I tend to take a wide angle lens and the tele-photo, just to save on weight. I have also bought an 'Outdoor' waistcoat/body warmer with loads of pockets that hold all my lenses, (it has an enormous poacher's pocket for the 400mm), but it does make my back ache after a day of togging.

Re: Turkey Vultures

Have it with pleasure, it drives me mad - it weighs a lot - it's hard to handhold (especially after walking carrying it for miles along with all the other kit too), it's poor in anything but the best light (mind, you shouldn't need to worry!), it's fairly soft too (well, mine is - others have been luckier). If you can afford better, I would go better - otherwise, it's very cheap, and does its job adequately provided you get used to its limitations!

Re: Turkey Vultures

TBH it is only for garden use, as I don't tend to go specifically to shoot birds,so maybe a 300 would do the job. I know the Sigma Bigma is a bit hit and miss, some people have cracking ones, and then others are quite soft. There is other stuff I need more, but will keep my eye out for a decent second hand lens, that might be good. Thanks for the advice guys xx
