Question/suggestion for bird photographers

Would it be possible to drill a (big-ish) hole in a tree and put bird food in it? Instead of having to use those bird-feeders?

Just thought it would be a good set-up for some shots :-/

Re: Question/suggestion for bird photographers

Yes you can Azz - some people do that.

I have my feeders hung up high but have 'wispy' shrubs around them which are strong enough for the birds to perch on (for photographs) without being strong enough for the cats to climb.

Re: Question/suggestion for bird photographers

If you do that wait until winter when the tree sap is down. We have a couple of trees with holes birds have drilled into them and they have survived.

Whoa! What's the tree going to think about that idea?

Re: Question/suggestion for bird photographers

As Bazza said if you do it, wait until late Autumn /Winter, I carved a couple of faces into our old apple tree when the kids were little, and literally cut out a hole to make a fairy doorway , and the tree was fine.

Re: Question/suggestion for bird photographers

I wouldn't do it because I'd be worried about harming the tree - and anyway, I don't have any trees suitable! I just have my feeders strung up on a piece of washing line, and have all my sticks and twigs strategically placed for my birdies to land on!

If it's harmful to the tree then I retract my suggestion
