Is this a woodpecker?

As you know, I don't know much at all about wildlife. I just looked out in the garden and saw this...a woodpecker I think?

Quite unusual i would guess living in the urban suburbs although a woodpecker (but green?) has appeared in my parents garden a mile or two away.

I quickly grabbed my D700 with 70-300. 300mm on a full frame isn't a lot, and had to photograph through a double glazed window with the sun on it so have whacked up the contrast and cropped so you can see it!!

Re: Is this a woodpecker?

Your can always tell the male from the female, the male has a red skull cap and the female,as in your picture, has a black head.

Juvinile male ( left ) being fed by mum (right )

Green Woodpecker (Taken quickly thru double glazing )

Re: Is this a woodpecker?

Azz

every year we are lucky enough to have the parents bring their offspring to our small orchard. its not unusual to see 4/5 at one time. We also have at least one visit every day
