Re: Second attempt of portraiting

These are ceertainly interesting photos, high contrast for sure. I'd like to know what graphic editing software you use? Are these photographed with available light or a flash/strobe? Knowing your editor will give us an idea for suggestions. Keep shooting, you've got natural talent.

Re: Second attempt of portraiting

Photoshop, and it was natural light (clouded sun) with white sheet for the background.

Re: Second attempt of portraiting

You are fortunate to have Photoshop as your editor. Not everyone has that advantage. Knowing that work on making your background more interesting without being distracting. I recently post the shot below where I took and existing portrai with a busy background and placed my friend in front of a gaussian blurred bale of hay. The resulting new composition was well received by Wilbur's wife & friends.

Working with available light is a good beginning. Portraiture is all about shaping light around a face to show character and personality. One of our YO members, Daisychains, shoots portraits professionally. You might look up her posts and make contact with her for advice.

Re: Second attempt of portraiting

Nice work Hayley - good composition and poses.

They're slightly dark here - but not sure whether that was your intention or not?

Re: Second attempt of portraiting

I prefer number 1 because of the light. The shadows on the face are interesting and give depth and there are catch lights in the eyes making them more 'alive'.
In number 2 the eyes are shadowed so they are kind of lost. A refelector would have been helpful here to bring light to the face.

Before I take a portrait I look carefully at how the light is on their face - is the light too flat and even with no shadowing around the nose (maybe its coming too much from the front) or is it too dark and shadowed (too far from behind or above?).
I also always look at the eyes and see if I can see catchlights. If I can't, I move them around until I can.
