Layers of tones
I sat for ages getting wind blown taking shots of low light. The zoom lens was the best choice to allow natural crops.

Nice shot Karl - so much going on there, but I think it works well 
If I was playing around with crops, I might crop out the bottom 3rd tho - just to see how it worked.

I see what you mean about the tones balancing without the bottom darker strip, but then it feels a little overpowered by such a central bright strip. Also it gives the landscape a bigger proportion which I think creates new unbalances.
I think I would probablly leave it as is.
