Re: Back to Glenelg

Nice one Norman - Makes me want to be back there !

I always think it's such an elaborate memorial and seems quite odd to find it where it is.

Some more info albeit 'swiped'.......

Components

PLINTH STONE
FIGURES BRONZE

PEACE AND VICTORY COMING TO THE AID OF STRICKEN HUMANITY. WINGED FEMALE FIGURE HOLDING UP A WREATH REPRESENTS VICTORY. KNEELING FEMALE FIGURE WITH ARMS RAISED IN SUPPLICATION REPRESENTS HUMANITY. KILTED HIGHLAND SOLDIER IN TAM O SHANTER AND STEEL HELMET AND RIFLE SLUNG, STANDING AT EASE WITH HEAD BOWED REPRESENTS PEACE. BROKEN DRUM AND DISCARDED CORONET POSSIBLE SYMBOLS OF TRANSIENT GLORY. DOVE PREPARING FOR FLIGHT.

Splendidly vigorous bronze sculpture of a Cameron Highlander, beseaching female figure and winged Peace raised upon a stone plinth against the Sound of Sleat. Closer observation reveals symbolism of an epic tragedy: a strangled dove, smashed crown and ruptured drumskin. The soldier looks more forlorn than victorious, and winged victory is holding her laurel wreath well out of reach.
