Sharp Dressed Man

Was out and about today mostly wanted to play with an Nikon 85mm f1.8 I have not long acquired and a Tamron SP24-135mm that has been in my cupboard pretty much for a few months. Anyway, the 85mm is absolutely great for the street photography I like to do. I do like to be up a bit closer, but sometimes standing off just a little means you may not be quite so obvious. This 85mm was perfect on my D300 and a joy to use. That gives me another problem if I go full frame I lose it's I.5x magnification. Decisions, decisons eh?

The Tamron? Well you won't find many of those about and performance seems to blow away the standard Nikon 24-120 that is supplied if you buy a D700 kit. However it is nowhere near such a joy to use as a lovely priime. In fact today had me manually focussing my primes several times as the autofocus with it's own mind was hindering my shots on occasions.

Anyway, I saw this sharp dressed man and shot him on the 85mm at f3.5. if any learners are looking in, the 85mm works as a 85mm x 1.5 on a Nikon crop sensor camera so = 122mm. 3.5 wide aperture throws background out of focus and gives shallow depth of field.

It's not put up for in depth C&C, was just a play really, but as always I'll take comments as you feel...

I would rather see how good the comparison is in colour, I think the Nikon will outshine the Tamron any day of the week, or you have a bad copy of the Nikon lens. Mine is razor sharp and a joy to use.

Thanks Bazza I do have a colour version but it looks a bit messy at the mo. Might post when I have cleaned it up a bit.

Re the lens, the 24-120VR from Nikon isn't that highly regarded. The earlier ones are considered soft and the latter ones 'better'. Some people suggest it limits performance on the full frame D700. The Tamron on the other hand is considered a gem http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...&cat=43&page=1

I've used a later Nikon 24-120 a few times on my D300 and I thought it was ok but many lenses can get by on DX.

Hi Moonie, guy is dressed as a mod. Had several friends but they were surrounded by onlookers and people wandering into shot. I just couldn't get a clear shot of the whole thing and there are people immediatly each side of the frame. Gave me an idea though for future.

Re full frame I like your logic we discussed on PM. I have been toying with the idea of FX for a while, but keep wondering what advantage it gives me personally over DX. In the end, FX is an advantage but specifically the D700 maybe doesn't have enough advantage to justify spending so much. I think it would be an advantage if I was getting 18MP and full frame, maybe faster AF, but as it is, the D700 only seems to be advantageous in low light, and, guess what, I don't really do that much with low light. i have been reading some stuff that seems to suggest picture libraries and critical work is demanding more than 12MP!! Therefore in a way it's spending a lot to buy into older technology. It's not a final decison, but maybe one to mull over a bit.

Sorta guessed he was a Modreminds me of several of my mates, and the amount of time they spend getting their clothes, and especially their scooters looking good is funny.

I can only say, from fiddling around with others cameras, but with my lenses the image quality between the D300 and D700, is not much, except for better handling of low light situations , plus in photography terms, though it's great the D700 is now getting older. So I'd personally wait for the updated version D700x/ D800. But, the D3 though old, does have something about the image quality that the D300 doesn't have, using the same lenses, though it has been updated twice, it still is a superb camera. But, if you go into D3 and upwards , it's serious money,

Personally, I 've had my D300 for exactly a year, and have noticed the massive difference in image quality, in relation to the glass you use, plus I am now becoming used to the ways of the Nikon I love using it, even gripped, I don't find it too big, can get a bit heavy if out all day, but it's not too much, the D700 isn't that much bigger or heavier. I do worry if a D3 would be too much for me to carry, but my Oly was half the size and about a third of the weight of my D300, and I adapted, so would probably adjust

I want FF, and I am so tempted by the cheaper D700's flying around, but in six months time, I know I would of wished I had waited to see what the latest upgrades bring.

Not much help am I, because I am in the same quandry, but I do love my D300, so I am happy to wait for now, and then see what the upgrades bring.

Having said all that, if someone dangled a D700 in front of me, I'd bite their hand off to get it

Re: Sharp Dressed Man

France has a 200 euro rebate on the D700 at the mo... maybe they'll expand that to other countries soon?

Nikon are rumoured to be bringing out two DSLRs this years - most people are pointing a D90 and D700 update... as they're the oldest in the range.

Re: Sharp Dressed Man

I get to talk to a man from Nikon in a few weeks. I won a comp. although the publicity isn't sorted yet so can't say too much about it. In the past the prize has been given by someone pretty well up the Uk Nikon tree so if we don't now what'scoming by then i may be able to ask what's on it's way.

I think that rebate probably equates to the free battery pack we have. Heard a rumour this offer may be extended. but D700's are currently creeping up because of exchange rate.
