OMG dropped them

Dropped my K20 attached to my horribly expensive Pentax DA* 60-250mm ED (IF) SDM on to the stone floor. Talk about a heart in mouth moment, prepared to replace the body but the lens is a very different matter.

Looked and checked the body first as the idea of looking at the lens scared me to death. Removed the lens and set it aside and the first thing I noticed was something small and clear plastic sculling around on the mirror. Removed it and found it was the focus screen, replaced it in the carrier and put the trusted Sigma 105 Macro on the body and took it out to test – can't believe it there is nothing wrong with the body at all, a tiny scuff on the bottom plate but otherwise it has survived almost unscathed and any problems with the shots I took are due to a problem with the photographer and nothing to do with the body.

Now for the really worrying bit have just put the 60-250 lens back on and trying to gather enough courage to try it out – fingers crossed for me please.

Re: OMG dropped them

Snaps, surely your gear is insured?? To be honest there can't be anyway you could drop a lens on a stone floor and everything be ok? A slight disruption could affect focus across the sensor plane etc.

Re: OMG dropped them

BC I keep meaning to insure them separately from the house contents insurance but I have not got round to it. I will do it now.

Have taken some shots with the K20 and the bounced lens and enlarged the results - I think I have got away with it. They are not as sharp as they could be but I think that was because I was shaking so much and my subjects were not very cooperative and neither was the light.

See what you think - it was pushed out all the way to 250 something I would not normally do.

Re: OMG dropped them

Seems you got away with it...amazed.

My household insurance company (Zurich) were happy to insure my gear and the terms are similar to insuring with a specialist company, possibly better. If I was a working pro it would have to be insured under another policy but as an amateur I am covered for accidents, theft etc. and not so specific terms about leaving it in the boot of a car etc. Specialist companies make you list everything, provide receipts (not much good for secondhand) and specify times for keeping stuff in a car i.e. not from 9pm to 7am for example (i wouldn't anyway but...)

Re: OMG dropped them

I can't believe my luck, Alan was very upset for me, in fact I think he was more upset than I was. Stupid, I really must insure them, have not had the lens long and I was just trying to come to terms with it.

Do others find that they can't just screw a lens on and get the best from it, I seem to take ages to start to get the best from a new lens, finding the best lengths etc.

Of now to start a new thread on insurance.

Re: OMG dropped them

Thanks Phil, the Woody is pretty sharp I think the larger birds keep still and as I had the camera on AV I was not paying much attention to the shutter speed, well to be honest I was not paying too much attention to the aperture either, just trying to control myself till I learned the truth about what had happened to the lens.

Bl**y dogs, suppose I should be thankful they did not hurt themselves as well.
