Re: katrinas 18th birthday

Hi tony, Bokeh is the way that the out of focus bits tend to look in a picture. The elements of the lens and the diaphragm that controls the aperture basically control the bokeh. Generally the highlights take on a particular shape as per the out of focus lights in your third picture. It's not the most technical explanation, but gives an idea.

Enthusiasts and professionals buy particular lenses for the bokeh they can create. For example portait and wedding photographers may find certain lenses particularly good to create an effect.

Funnily enough I like the first picture the best. It's simple, does the job and shows Katrina with her boyfriend or whoever. The black and white is just a straight conversion and I don't think it works just like that. Although the shot is taken just with flash straight on, for the family album I'm sure you could work on it in Photoshop or whatever, clean it up a bit and enhance it to get more from it. As it stands it's a nice shot of the two of them together.

Re: katrinas 18th birthday

Think they are all lovely shots to remember the occasion which is after all what you set out to do. Think you could do better with the B & W at the moment for me it is a bit too contrasty for my taste I would prefer to think greyscale rather than black and white.

The last is very nice so is the bokeh but I would loose it as it distracts from the main subject and I think I would lighten a little.

Still what I would do does not come into it, if you are happy with your work then that is all you need and if the model likes them too, well, what more can you want.
