Meet the Parents.

I've got a specific shoot tomorrow involving a band, a makeup artist & a stylist.

I've booked some gear out from uni and figured I'd have a play before the actual day.

I've been using the D90 (which is so much better than my old Canon 350D) couple with 2 x Bowens Gemini 750+ with Umbrellas. I took the chance to photograph the parents in the lounge with both lights.

Here is my favourite image, slightly cropped.

Kit 1
Canon 7D
Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon Speedlite 430ex II

Re: Meet the Parents.

I don't have parents any more, they passed away many years ago. However I still talk to them as I am a Medium. Well thats what it says in my underpants.

Re: Meet the Parents.

That's a nice shot Dan, has a retro feel to it.

How are you finding the D90? You gonna move over to the dark side?

Re: Meet the Parents.

The Nikon bodies feel so much more robust and thought out, the current deal on the D700 is extremely tempting, though not sure what lens I'd get for it?

Any thoughts? Ideally a fast lens as I'm into live music photography as well as normal portraiture.

Re: Meet the Parents.

Good luck for tomorrow..

I would fully expect a D90 to feel a little more robust and 'better' than a Canon 350D to be honest. Whilst they're not a million miles apart they're not really like for like. This Nikon is not only a newer model but also higher spec and better build quality

Brand models 'flipped' it's like a Nikon D40 V a Canon 50D I guess.

If you want to go for Nikon based on this comparison the I'm sure you will do fine but I wouldn't go for a D700 simply because a D90 is better than a 350D.

I own a Canon 40D just now (my own modest body) but use better Nikon and Canon in my job and love them both.

For me just now - Full frame the D700 would be my choice along with the 5DII from canon. If full frame isn't your thing - the 7D would be my pick.

That said - If I was going to spend the money - I'd probably bypass both for a 2nd hand pro body and invest in glass.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
1D2 & 40D

Re: Meet the Parents.

I think it almost always boils down to ergonomics - some people prefer Canon some Nikon

Re lens, if you want something inexpensive there's the nifty fifty to get you started
Here's some of the popular ones for what you want to do:

50mm 1.4
85mm (either version)
24-70mm 2.8
70-200mm 2.8

Then perhaps a 35mm too, for the more arty shots.

Re: Meet the Parents.

I see you requested some C and C on this image.
My comment would be the hand chop. I'm finding the crop across the wrist a little uncomfortable.
