5. what do u think? (border)

this is the border of Saudi Arabia And Bahrain.
The two countries are divided by a small sea at the middle.
In the picture, I was standing on the Saudi side. On the other side Bahrain after the small sea.

i tried to bring a story out of this picture.
still we the peoples out of peoples are always divided by these fence.
and we call ourselves free!

One thing confused me so much after reading about the THIRDS RULES.
Can u pls tell me how to apply THIRDS RULES on this picture?

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

In the above picture its perspective which is important ( two lines appearing to join in the distance, as the fence and lamps posts show ). The rule of thirds can't be always applied to every photo, and the art of knowing when and what to apply it to comes with experience. Rules are there to be broken and are not set in concrete so judgement comes into play.

Now as for the actual photo, without the explaination it could be a fence around anything, but as it divides two countries it puts a whole new meaning to the photograph.
Strangly enough I happen to like the photo not just for subject matter but from the technical side as well, it hasn't been altered too much in editing and shows things as how they are..

I think if comments are going to be made about a photo they should be helpful saying what one likes and dislikes about it, or how they may be improved. All too often all you get is "nice picture" or something like, which is something I try and avoid.

I have sent you a private message you might find helpfull

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

I think this shot has a lot of potential, and a very interesting story - but for me, something's not quite right... and I'm not sure what!

Perhaps a different angle on the whole subject may have helped? I do think it's a good shot though, as I say, much potential!

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

Zounds
What I have taken into consideration is the possibility that the photo could only have been taken from that position. There are many reasons as to why the picture has to be from there, obviously moving to the right is out of the question because of the fence. Moving back might also be impossible , or to the left would not show up the line of the lamp posts, as shooting in horizontal against vertical may not produce the right results. As it is, it gives an idea on how narrow and high the gap is between the lamp posts and the fence.

Everyone has their own ideas on what is best obviously, and if you can pin point what you consider is not quite right it may be of some help.

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

@ Zoundz & Bazza

Wow! what a tough technical analysis between the pros.

Thank u guys.

as Bazza said, I seen that perspective too while taking the shot.
beside that there's a story of divided countries also.
like the picture may suit a conflict for country and refugees.
like i could talk about stories looking at that pic and give it a life.

u r right, maybe it could be taken from other perspective or angle.
at the moment, i only seen this.

thank you

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

I'm sorry Bazza, but just because something has an interesting story doesn't automatically make it a good photo! It needs to express that story, but this photo doesn't do that. I should be able to see the story by looking at the photo - a photo is a thousand words - you shouldn't need a thousand words to explain a photo, because it doesn't convey its message

I think perhaps a wider lens may help with this photo Shahoo, or perhaps shooting from a different place along the fence, Obviously, I cannot give a particularly helpful suggestion from that perspective because I don't know the place! You need to clearly show that it's the border of two countries somehow, rather than just a fence As at the moment, it doesn't say much as a photo.

Having a friendly discussion, Laura (Zounds) and I have had many, can give different ideas on the same picture. It is really up to the person who asked for help to pick/ choose/ ignore what has been mentioned.

Shahhossain

Without getting into the technical side of things my comment will be more as to the story or not that is being told by your shot.

As a viewer I would not know that this was a border between two countries unless there was an explanation or if it was an element of a documentary type presentation with other images telling a story. On it's own it is just an image of a fence.

But does it matter. To yourself this image has a meaning and no explanation is necessary. When you look back at this image in a years time it will still bring back the memories and emotion that you had when pushing the shutter button.

If the image pleases you, then that is the most important thing. Pleasing others is secondary and not really point of our hobby.

Professionals on the other hand have to produce images that please or inform others as that is how they earn their living.
