Quick calibration for LCD monitors

Most LCD monitors ship with their 'normal' setting with excessive blue - this is because of the strong lighting used in retail stores and their need to appear 'brighter' than their competitor's monitors on display in the same store.

A very quick fix is to go into your monitors menu, and change the 'colour tone' setting to 'warm'.

I've tried this on a couple of screens here and doing so brings the colour tone much closer to our calibrated screens.

Quick test

The center of this image should look cream/beige, not grey or with a tinge of lilac:

Switch between both modes to see the difference

If your screen has been calibrated (with one of the calibration tools) then you won't need to do this.

Let me know if you try this and whether it works for you.

Uncallibrated and beige here.
I don't think my monitor is too far off actually, but I do plan to invest in a callibrator.

Re: Quick calibration for LCD monitors

Are you guys comparing 'normal' 'cold' 'warm' modes? That's the best way to see if there's a difference, as our eyes will try to compensate or get used to whichever mode you're in.

Not all monitors will have this colour mode option tho (my main one does not for example).

Re: Quick calibration for LCD monitors

It depends on why you want to calibrate a monitor and how good your computer graphics card is. If its just for viewing then colour accuracy isn't really that important. If you are calibrating for photoprinting then your in a different ball game. This is where using proper calibrating software comes into its own.
I have mentioned before that I have Color Mukie Photo to not only calibrate my monitors and printers, but to pair them up together in conjunction with the computers. This unit also allows your own profile to be used on the computer instead of the preset factory default settings. On top of this you can define the type/quality/make and size of the photo paper you wish to print on.

Having recently upgraded my printer for reference and can recommend, have a look at the one I purchased the Epson Photo PX710W @ around £140
