Southern Ocean Birds

Wandering Albatross
Taken on the Drake Passage
Sailors used to say (still do, really) that the souls of dead sailors inhabit the albatrosses. If they do, they must be at peace. Watching these guys sailing for hours over the ocean without so much as a beat of their almost 3 meter wingspan is incredible.

King Penguins
Taken at South Georgia's Gold Harbour... filthy weather, black beach and white water not helping a bit.

Black-Browed Albatross and Rockhopper Penguin.
When one of the pair of albatrosses finally returns from a long trip at sea, the greeting ritual involves all sorts of beak slapping and calling, fascinating to watch. A Rockhopper penguin looks from the background. Taken at North Point, Falkland Islands.

Re: Southern Ocean Birds

Thanks, everyone, your comments are much appreciated!
Phil - to be honest I didn't quite get the "hype" about the Wandering albatross (yeah, so it's a big seagull. And?) Until I saw it - it's not just huge, the way it flies (glides), it's wingtips skimming those huge waves, is incredible. But from close, they are really beautiful and their size is really very impressive.
