A lot of the YOP Flickr members have each other as contacts anyway.
Just create it as invitation only within Flickr. That way any Flickr members can be invited to join the Yop Flickr group (and then hopefully YOP itself) but Yo Photographer members without Flickr accounts wouldn't be drawn over.

I already made it public... does that prevent invites from being sent out? Can it be changed?

Invitation only means you can't just join the group yourself - you would have to get an invite from another group member.
It can be changed because you set the group up but what you've done makes sense.

I don't really think the two are the same - Flickr is simply a photo sharing community (never tried the other two nor do I want to
). Yes people can comment on the photo's but you can't easily have the indepth discussions people have on here. Several members already have Flickr accounts and are active on here so I don't think it will detract from YoP at all.
