Yo Photographer group on Flickr

Was one ever created ?

I've just noticed I have a lot of you guys as contacts on Flickr and wondered about creating a Yo Photographer group.

I had a quick look but couldn't find one.

How do you create them? Do they see it as 'advertising'?

If not I'll sign up and create one for you guys

What are they used for? Just to sorta show you are part of that group?

If they take away activity from here then it's prob not a good idea - we need all the posts we can get right now

It can be created as 'invite only' or 'anyone can join'

We have a Champdogs group and we don't go on there as much as we do the dog site.

a flickr group is a good idea because flickr gets wider global coverage - that might attract, in turn, more users to here!

It's easy to make one, go for it I'd say. just somewhere you can submit photos to if ya want people to see em in one big group.

All I would say Azz is......

If you were a member of a hill walking forum (for example) - you could set up a group on Flickr so everybody from that forum could see each others walking pictures and be notified when they were uploaded. Great if your forum isn't that geared up towards photographs.

Flickr also has a forum and allows you to comment on peoples pictures so (with YOP being a photography site) it kind of duplicates what we already have here.

You may be able to fashion it in a way that it could bring new people to YOP though as anybody that was a member of the YOP Flickr Group could invite any of their 'other' Flickr contacts to joing the YOP Flickr group and then they may join YOP itself.

We'll give it a go then

But we have to bear in mind, that big sites like flickr/myspace/facebook etc are usualy the death of smaller communities like YoP. So if no tangible benefit becomes apparent and it seems to detract people from posting here, we'll have no choice but to close it. So I'm happy for us to trial it out so long as you guys know it's just a trial.

It's crucial at this early stage in YoP's life that we keep the activity up and not keep sending people away to other sites just because they are bigger - hence the apprehension

So we only really want it for existing flickr members - we don't want to make a big song and dance about it on YoP (i.e. advertise them to people who have never heard about them before) because in the long run that only hurts us and benefits them. It's a bit like people posting links to competing forums when members ask questions on a different one (it's a tad rude).
