Aquariums , and taking pics

I have been to the Aquarium today, very cool, loads of sharks etc, and sting rays, and likkle fishes. I didn't take my camera as I love messing about with the sting rays and I promised the kids it would stay at home

So sorry for waffling, what I want to know, if I wanted to take pics at the Aquarium , as they have some very cool sharks how should I set my camera up?? as it is very dark in there, and they are continually moving obviously

Just wondered????

Higher ISO

No flash - as it would just reflect on the glass.

I haven't taken any myself mind so I may well be missing something!

Re: Aquariums , and taking pics

Aquariums are really tricky.

You need to use the highest ISO you can with the fastest lens you have (as fish are rarely still).

As a consideration you might want to use a circular polarising filter, this will help to remove the reflections in the glass, but you will lose between and half and a full stop through the filter, and this may make your exposure times unacceptable.

I would not shoot at anything less than 1/125. Lot of people say they can hand hold shoot at 1/60, then you see their images, and realise they can't.

Try to manual focus on a point in the tank, because glass and water can upset the auto focus, and the camera can end up focussing all over the place. Then track a fish till it wanders past your focal point.

You will have to take a few hundred images to get some nice ones too

I have found pressing the lens flat to the glass helps avoid reflections, but its like looking at the world with a toilet roll, and can take ages for anything to float in to your field of view (unless you have a wide-fast lens).

Re: Aquariums , and taking pics

Thanks for all the advice It is so cool, you go in this long tunnel on a sort of moving path and the sharks are all swimming above you

I got a few pics on my camera phone, but it is a case, of what is that moving blob oh, and I think I got a shark eye

Re: Aquariums , and taking pics

try a rubber lens hood, gets a good seal against the glass and no flash glare
