Prime lens practice!

Sorry I've been mia and I only dip in - my 6 month old daughter is keeping me busy!
My hubby got a voucher and used it to treat me to a prime lens for our anniversary - I got the 35mm f1.8 prime lens -love it! Never 'got' prime, but learning and also been shooting more in manual.
Thought I'd share some of my prime lens practice shots, as always and feedback welcomed

Re: Prime lens practice!

Have you found you have to use a slightly different technique using a prime lens? I found DOF is the thing to be more aware of. What would suggest is with flower shots I tend to concentrate on one flower head, maybe worth a thought.

No 5 photo is a tricky type of shot to get, a close up of a moving insect does need a faster shutter speed. I have no end of trouble going for a shot like that so don't really bother unless the insect/flower is still.

What you could try is putting a small stake against the flower stem out of shot and gently tie the flower to it. That should keep it still and then set up the camera on a tripod to compose the photo.

Seems to me a prime lens being of a fixed mm length is less forgiving (or should I say more precise) than a zoom lens. , Of course it might be a prime lens is better "tuned" as its set at a certain mm length with more of a precision ground glass than a zoom lens, I don't know.
For me anyway I find I have to consider to a greater extent what the DOF is when using a prime lens irrespective of the camera settings against a zoom lens. Sounds a bit daft I know but maybe its because I prefer, or got used to, using a zoom lens most of the time.

just to prove I have tried similar

And it ain't easy but concentration on a single flower head and bee, well let you decide

Have you tried this yet

Getting down level with a fungus and close up gives plenty of scope to put something on top/underneath it like a reduced in size garden gnome. Play about with this photo if you want to.

A cut apple attracts all sorts of insects and a great way of setting up a shot.

Re: Prime lens practice!

35 f1.8 sounds a nice combination.

I have a 50 f1.8 and whilst I find it a nice length of full frame - I think it's a bit too long on a crop sensor. I really like my old M42 fit 24mm f2.8 prime that I use with a Canon EF adaptor.

Primes do make you think a little bit more about composition and framing but that's not a bad thing.

Re: Prime lens practice!

Have to agree about primes. I was initially a little disappointed. But it was me not the lenses.

Re: Prime lens practice!

I love my 50mm 1.8, to the point I've just bought a 28mm prime and am eagerly awaiting it. The autofocus zooms make it easy to take photos, but stop you focussing (pun intended) on taking pictures, ITSWIM?

Thanks everyone
I really like your bee pictures Bazza - and thank you for the tips too. I have so much to learn, but I'm enjoying the challenge of a prime lens

When you find there is nothing else to learn in photography that is the time to give up. What I am finding out slowly is the difference a decent camera and lens can make to a picture.

Nikon D300 great camera and takes good photos with all my lenses, but wow the D800 with the 24-70mm f2.8 lens attached certainly ups the game.
