Photography courses

Hi,

Has anyone tried a homestudy photography course. Can they help in brushing up my skills? I don't have much time to attend a class, i'm afraid.

Thanks

Re: Photography courses

Sorry I can't offer much advise with regard to a home course as I've never done one, personally I think a great deal can be learnt from forums like these and the internet in general, you can look at other peoples work and pickup tips and ideas.

For me, the difficult part is the composition and artistic side.

Good luck.

Re: Photography courses

Agree with Ken

I also think finding the best medium for you helps, some people learn a great deal by reading, some like screencasts, some like practical.

Then, it's finding material within the medium that suits you too - some books are better written than others, some screencasts are easier to follow etc.

Why not check out our photography guides to get you started? They are listed on the forum homepage on the right hand side

Re: Photography courses

I'm something of a hoover when it comes to photography (as you probably notice...) and if I see something I like (which I do a lot) I have to research it and try it out. When I'm not doing that I'm surfing the 'net looking for advice and ideas. Not courses as such, but certainly home-schooling. That Nikon Guy and DigitalRev (if you can stand the childishness and casual camera damage) are very useful arenas.

If there were a course that taught me how I could reliably, infallibly convert what my mind saw into the exact thing in the camera then I'd be at the front of the queue, but for me part of the fun is the trial and the errors.

Re: Photography courses

I am not in favour of learning either by going to college or home courses. you don't develop your own style but copy someone else.

For example take your great painters, they became famous because the did it their way and their pictures are now worth millions. Those that tried to follow in their footsteps are unknown and their paintings not worth anywhere near as much.

What I did and recommend is when looking at pictures in magazines/newspapers/sales brochures and the like, don't look at the picture as a picture but how it was taken.
Car adverts are usually taken at wheel level is a good example. Ask yourself what angle was it taken at -how did the lighting affect the photo- what was in the composition- how was the subject matter placed in the photo- etc etc.

i don't do portraits but I would suggest looking at professionals how they place hands-which way the subject is looking- props- background etc.

You can learn a lot this way at no cost

Re: Photography courses

Thank you! This really does help.
A friend of mine suggested a course which he did recently and said he found it really useful. I think he has improved immensly, when I look at some of his photos.

I'll have a look over the weekend and let you guys know what I decide to do.

Thanks again!

Re: Photography courses

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I'd like to do some some sort of workshop but never found one that suits.

The local camera club scene to me kind of scares me a bit, and I really dislike the Digital Rev stuff, they just seem absolute clowns regardless of their abilities. Mockney Chinese just doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid.
