I need some help

I managed to take this photo tonight on the way home from Glasgow Green. Its only taken with the coolpix but I need some help as to what settings to use to make the photo better. I will be using the fuji finepix next time so I can put it on manual.

Re: Glasgow at night - Help needed.

Generally, a longer shutter speed will compensate for poor light - but that means using a tripod or resting the camera on something steady.

Also, if you are there again sometime, try the different modes for the same pic, eg landscape mode, no flash mode etc

Does the camera have many different modes? If not I think it might have the shutter speed option..

Re: Glasgow at night - Help needed.

Thanks all

The camera does have loads of different modes on it most of which I have not figured out yet  but I will get there eventually. There is a manual setting which I will have a go with next time maybe on the other bridges as well as that one.

Another question When is the best time for that kind of photo. Dusk or wait until it is really dark?

Re: Glasgow at night - Help needed.

I think it's a fab picture as is! With regards to the best time well that will always be subjective depending on what effect you want to achieve!

Re: Glasgow at night - Help needed.

I would use your camera on manual and set a high aperture and then bracket the shutter speed making sure your camera.

Re: Glasgow at night - Help needed.

Carole
If I may make a suggestion, when you go to retake the picture take a pencil and pad with you and a torch. What I suggest is you take several pictures at different settings and write down each photo setting. When you get back to view you have notes on each picture. Then you can check which setting is the best for that type of shot. This applies to any photo until you get used to the camera more. If you don't have a monopod or tripod try using a beanbag to rest the camera on to steady it. Camera shake is one of the most common reasons why pictures look blurred.

Some photo editing suites, if shooting in RAW for example, can extract the picture data but
as I use a DSLR, I am not sure if your camera includes this data when taking the picture.
