What is your usual PP routine?

What's your usually post processing routine - do you even have one, or does it vary so much that it couldn't be called a routine (or perhaps you don't edit photos at all )

It does vary between nothing at all and just about anything however for those pictures that go through a standard kind of jpeg PP....

1 Straighten if required.
2 Crop if required.
3 Clone anything out if required.
4 Curves, levels, colour balance, contrast etc as required.
5 Sharpen.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Re: What is your usual PP routine?

Mines usually:

1. Crop/resize for web
2. Add slight sharpen to compensate for reduction in size
3. Levels
4. Save for web

If I shoot in raw tho my pp varies depending on the photo.

Re: What is your usual PP routine?

It depends what or who the pictures are for.

But my basic workflow, is upload with Nikon Transfer, and bin any immediately noticable duff shots. Then go through them again in CaptureNX2,being more ruthless. Then start processing them, tweaking any levels, colour etc, save the files in various formats, depends what I want the image for. Then, any that need further tweaking or I want to play around with, go into CS4. I do my resizing for web use in CS4,and add my watermark here.

Re: What is your usual PP routine?

It all depends on what you want to PP. Editing pano shots takes a different route to straightforeward editing. Also it depends on what/how much editing (if any) a photo needs, therefore different approaches depend on what is required.

Re: What is your usual PP routine?

Great thread Azz

I don't crop until the end anymore and I make sure I save an uncropped psd version so that I can revisit at anytime and readjust the layers etc.

I guess I generally:
1. run noiseware on a duplicate layer then mask back on eyes / details etc
2. clone out any distactions etc
3. run a levels adjustment layer to lighten / brighten / sort overall colour balance etc
4. run adjustment layers for any specific areas that need attention (shadows under eyes, whiter eyeballs etc.)
5. if any selective sharpening is required I do this with a high pass filter masked and applied as required
6. I then save this as and call it my 'basic' copy
7. then if any cropping / rotating etc is required I do that and save as 'basic cropped' copy
8. then if I feel the need to be creative I flatten and open several copies of the image. I experiment with styles / actions / textures etc. on each. Any I like I flatten, copy and add as layers to the orginal flattened copy calling each layer a name (textured, mono etc) . I call this file 'edits'. I can this way store all my edits as one stacked up file - its more an archive or pile of pictures than a finished image.
9. My favourite edit I will sharpen for web using unsharp mask, add my initials, save and upload.
10. If for facebook I will resize (to 500 whatsits across) and extra sharpen as fb softens everything!

Lol! is that a bit complicated????

One bit of advice - crop before you do a levels adjustment. If you crop out a dark or light area your levels adjustment will work better after cropping. Think of the way your autoexposure works on a DSLR. The same applies to levels adjustments.

Re: What is your usual PP routine?

I used to do it that way but now I prefer having an edited uncropped copy.
I can always refiddle the levels adjustment layer as necessary - so easy to do as its a non-destructive process and much much easier than starting again when you realise that your crop needs adjusting.
