Its about reading the dog and timing, of course on a proper shoot this isn't possible so you have to rely on the owner knowing the dogs and what works best for their dogs. It helps with animal shots to have 2 people... the photographer and a handler and then the animal will be focussed on the handler (the one with food) leaving you to move around and get the best angle. I tell "the handler" (most likely the owner in many cases) to make the dog sit and then ask them to move behind me or to the side of me to get the best angles of the dog
He had eaten and had a long walk
He has not found the relax button yet!! TBH I don't think he ever will

I am going to get the kids to stand behind me next time. Kids mean food and playtime to Mack, he watches them to see if they drop any food, or if they have a tennis ball Will take off his collar next time I try aswell.

Thank you KK and Sam for your advice, anybody else is welcome to comment. I don't mind xxx

Re: The Mad one...

I agree with all of KKs points

I think the blur is a bit too much - and a more natural bokeh would be nicer
The tag can go
Also I would experiment with angles, I think some dogs are suited to different ones and a whole session spent just on shooting different angles to see which one suits that particular dog best - then once you know that go into session on getting that perfect shot with that angle

Look forward to seeing an update with more pics in this thread Moon

Re: The Mad one...

I feel your pain! I have two that as soon as I bend down, come galloping over full speed because they think it's time for cuddles. Oh and I have one who gets really jealous of the attention I pay to my camera and tries to paw it out of my hands!

The best shot I've got of one of my 'cuddle' dogs, is one where I had a helper attracting the dogs attention and then as soon as they looked I took the photo. It's one of my favourites, I think I might post it later actually.

Re: The Mad one...

It is hard trying to shoot an affectionate dognice to be loved I suppose

I am lucky with Meg once she has had a long walk she just plods around, and she is very photogenic, whereas Mack looks good from certain angles and a bit geeky from others

Will take him out for a really long bike ride tomorrow and try again.

Re: The Mad one...

Now I actually quite like this (says she who normally doesn't like much PP )

I'm not too bothered about the tag (they are a necessary evil ) but yes, if it is at home and you are posing for the shot then I would take his collar off.

Personally I would like to see his head raised slightly (classic portrait shot), however I think this works fine. To me this image is viewed more as a painting than a photograph - the most distracting part is the blur on top of his head (which doesn't seem to follow a natural line) otherwise I think the blurring is rather artistic

I think that if you were a little more careful with the blurring, it could look good on canvas
