The Mad one...

Okay, out of all my pets, Mack is the one I really struggle with, he is soo cute in the flesh, but it just doesn't come through on camera...

I want to take pic a that looks like him, but emphasises his fluffiness, and soft fur, but keeps his really sharp eyes. Does that make sense???

Re: The Mad one...

See that wasn't hard I know , he is a tricky thing to capture still

I shall tell him to keep still and look up more!!! See if I get down too low so I am more eye level, he think it's playtime and comes and wants hugs, so I find him really hard to photograph, because if I get down to his level or too close, he just wants fuss. I need a massive zoom, and photograph him from miles away.

Re: The Mad one...

my honest opinion.... I LOVE THIS PICTURE!!!

he is a wonderful looking boy! Pets are hard to photograph but keep practicing. What i do is (with a lot of patience) when they are looking down or looking away, have a squeeky toy behind my back or make a squeeky noise and as they look up at me i click the shutter release.

This works most of the time, but you only get a few goes before they have had enough and decide its playtime

Re: The Mad one...

Ill pop my CCs in bullet points followed by an explanation and or solution. (Im still not used to doing these and dont want to upset anyone so take it on good faith!!)

  • Blurred background: This was the first thing in noticed and its really noticable that you have done it manually. It really takes away from the professional quality.
Use your Aperture effectivley for a natural DoF. If your not sure how to do this follow this link: http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=27

  • Composition: Way to close and to high
When your subject is looking away from the camera, always allow for extra space either above/below/next to, where the subject is looking. It provides a much more balanced shot.

Try to get a little more down to his level and get some more eyes in for a better focal point

See here for some more on Composition: http://www.yophotographer.com/page.p...=rue+of+thirds

  • Dog tags are distracting

Thank you I think he is gorgeous too, not bad for a mutt is he
He was watching a spider, which was why he was actually still

I have to be careful with noises etc, as I get to do about two before he bounds over,he is just so playful Glad I am not the only one who gets a few shots then has to give up.
Will keep trying, I want to get a really good headshot of him to put on a canvas, I have one of Meg ready, but I want one of him too.
I could post him down to you , so you could take a pic of him

First of all I asked for C&C so please be honest,

You are right about the blur,it was a chance of catching in a good position and click, but it was in front of the kitchen wall, and had a pipe next to him

Excellent tips on Aperture thank you, it is just so hard when you have a split second to capture him

I am going to try all your tips KK,I am really grateful, honest
Just messing with you xxx

I will keep trying I am determined to get one fluffy, cute shot of him!!!!!

Re: The Mad one...

To be honest i get some of the best shots after meal times and after a walk when they are that little bit more sleepy and less likely to come to you expecting food.

Its about reading the dog and timing, of course on a proper shoot this isn't possible so you have to rely on the owner knowing the dogs and what works best for their dogs. It helps with animal shots to have 2 people... the photographer and a handler and then the animal will be focussed on the handler (the one with food) leaving you to move around and get the best angle. I tell "the handler" (most likely the owner in many cases) to make the dog sit and then ask them to move behind me or to the side of me to get the best angles of the dog
