Helocopters & Lightroom + CS4

The last day or two there has been a few threads on processing in Lightroom and/or PS. There have also been a few Helicopters hovering around

Well, I took the dogs down the shore this afternoon and was going to take the Canon 40D & 70-200mm f2.8 but forgot to put it in the truck. Still I had the 5D + 17-40mm with me so I still had a camera.

When I got out the truck that sinking feeling come on me when you realise you've not got the right equipment (happens to me all the time) Hovering across the harbour just 20/30 feet above the water was a Chinook helicopter. Now as good as the 17-40mm is I was not going to be able to get a picture with it.

In the viewfinder the helicopter looked like a dot in the distance. And then to compound things the Chinook started to lift a RIB out of the water. Now I am really sick as a parrot.

The RIB was dropped back into the water and then marines started abseiling down from the helicopter into the RIB.

I am now nearly suicidal. Why didn't I bring the other camera

Well started the walk and after 45 minutes, all the time the helicopter is lifting the RIB, towing the RIB, Lifting it out of the water, the Chinook started heading toward me.

I grabbed a few shots as it sped over the top of me and, though not very good here, is the result.

The first one is as the raw file came out with no processing at all. The second is my attempt to rescue a half decent image from it.

I processed it in Lightroom, croped, exposure, fill light, clarity, vibrance and some sharpening. I then passed it over to CS4 via Lightroom (this way the file is not saved as tiff or psd file, you are just working on the raw with the adjustments done in Lightroom) and ran the image through Neat Image, and sharpened it with smart sharpener. Resized it and saved as a jpeg.

About ten minutes work. I could have spent more time and possibly got a better result but this is only for fun and not an image I NEED for a customer.

Pic 1 (Raw file, no adjustments)

Pic 2 (Processed and adjusted in Lightroom and CS4)

It's never going to be a top notch capture but I think it goes to show that sometimes you can rescue an image.

By the way the image came out at 3400 pixels along the longest side so should be able to print to A4 comfortably. That's the beauty of the 21mp sensor in the 5D.

Apologies for going so long

Steve

good recovery Steve. You should get down to Rockly Sands more often ... there are always a whole bunch of Marines milling around there

I keep meaning to pop down the road to RAF Leuchars but I've heard a few tales of photographers getting a hard time.
