Fujifilm Finepix HS20 exr

Hello!

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to photography, and my OH bought me this camera for my birthday, I love it and have managed to get some half decent pictures so far. However all of my action shots come out blury and out of focus.

I am off to a horse show tomorrow an I would like to take my camera for some practice. What settings are the best for taking pictures of horses jumping and moving? Any other tips would be much appreciated!

Thankyou

Anyone? Even if someone could point me in the direction of some helpful old threads that would be fab!

I've not really shot any horse trials, but I would say put your camera in TV mode (shutter priority) and select a reasonable shutter speed, say 1/500 and above if light will permit.

Try to follow the horse with a smooth swing of the camera and squeeze the shutter button off this should give you some reasonable result, but it does take practise, so stick with it.

Good luck.

Agree with Ken - try a fast shutter speed

Also, it's too late now but perhaps in the morning, have a practise on your dogs or some cars - follow them and then click the shutter when you want the shot.

Yes, higher shutter speeds are the best way hopefully you'll have nice light, that'll make all the difference Look forward to seeing your shots!

Re: Fujifilm Finepix HS20 exr

The camera has mechanical image stabilising as well. Check to make sure that is on, as it has a massive (X30) zoom lens, equivalent, if my maths is right, to a 700+mm lens. The temptation is to use that to zoom in to the subject, and there is no way you're going to be able to hand-hold a lightweight camera with that kind of zoom without getting the shakes. Try not to zoom in more than a 200mm equivalent if you can. Or use a tripod (although that is likely to be impossible at an event)

Re: Fujifilm Finepix HS20 exr

It seems your camera can give from 24mm to 720mm (35mm equivalent) in focal length with the 30x optical zoom. A rule of thumb ive been told is to try and match the shutter speed to the focal length, so at max zoom 720mm you would need a similar shutter speed or more.

Re: Fujifilm Finepix HS20 exr

Try to avoid digital zoom - the picture quality will reduce the more you digitally zoom in.

To start with I would set the camera to Sport and zoom in mechanically. That will give you the settings you need to capture action photographs. You can always zoom in during post processing.

Then look at the EXIF data and try to emulate that, either manually or on Aperture priority
