Canon 7D Battery Grip - fake?

I've been looking at getting the Battery Grip For my new Canon 7D, and thought I'd search ebay for second hand, I stumbled across this but it seems too good to be true?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Canon-BG-E7-BGE7-Battery-Grip-7D-/110613812731?pt=UK_Photography_DigitalCamBatt_RL&h ash=item19c118d5fb

Nevermind, I've concluded its fake.

Re: Canon 7D Battery Grip - fake?

You need to read the descriptions very carefully.

If you look, it does not say that this is a canon battery grip, it says that it is a battery grip for a canon. They don't tell you the actual make but it is most certainly not a canon.

Whether its worth the risk or not is a different matter. I don't mind buying non-brand stuff when its just a few pounds but £40 is still quite a bit to throw away if it is a dud (or even works for a wee while before packing up).

Sorry - just seen the bottom bit of your post

Re: Canon 7D Battery Grip - fake?

The guy looks like a genuine trader, more likely to be a cheap third party copy. There are several other similar offers on eBay.

Yeah looks like a cheap copy - most of the time they are not as good as the genuine thing, sometimes they're 'ok' and others awful

Re: Canon 7D Battery Grip - fake?

It's not 'fake' as such - it's just not a Canon one.

I'm 99% sure this particular model is the BP-7D made by Phottix who (along with Hahnel) are one of the decent 3rd party grip manufacturers.

Re: Canon 7D Battery Grip - fake?

Loads of people using third party stuff quite happily and without concern. You have to pick and choose dependant on your budget and the job in hand. Whilst you will always get those who always want new, genuine, and can afford it, there are the rest of us who maybe choose secondhand and/or third party. You will be using non-genuine parts in many of the things you do in life whether it is having your car serviced or your cooker repaired. You have to decide when such things make a difference or not.

In this instance this grip will probably do as much as the original. In some instances they do more as you find them with built in timers or bigger batteries. The Phottix grips are meant to be fine and for most people will do as good a job as the original. However, what i don't like in this instance is the seller is creating an idea that that this is the original which is typical Ebay trading. Sellers should be upfront and just say 'pattern part' or replacement part like they do if you go and get a set of brake pads or a radiator or whatever it is for your car so you can feel you are in a proper, regulated market.
