Re: 10 Union Street

Sorry, going to have to buck the trend of complete praise here. You have chosen a great subject, so full marks for seeing the opportunity. The door is quite interesting and I'm sure you could make this work in colour or black and white. However for me the subject matter you want us to see is let down by it's technical interpretation.

In my view, which of course means bugger all in the scheme of things, the door needs to be photographed square on at a lower point with the frame parallel to the sides of the picture - ideally with a tripod. The door appears to be photographed at head height and consequently you have the lines out of true. You may be able to correct this in Photoshop. I'd also say that to see the texture, the image needs to be very sharp. It looks soft. In the image although I can see the curls of paint and the old door, the mono conversion leaves this looking very murky and shades of grey. I'm sure this picture could be converted to black and white, but I'm left wondering what the original colour image would look like. An old red door for example would be striking looking all battered and faded with curled paint.

I'm sorry to come up with the above, but on a subject like this it is often possible to go back. If I didn't think you could make something interesting of that door done a little better I wouldn't have bothered C&C'ing. On the contrary I can imagine it as a vibrant interesting image particularly printed up on a good matt fine art paper with a nice mount.
