Qustion for Canon users regarding RAW

How do other people go about using Canon CR2 (RAW) files with Photoshop ?

The ‘Digital Photo Professional’ software that came with my 40d pulls the files off the camera. I can then adjust all the RAW settings for the photo and then press a ‘send to Photoshop’ icon. The RAW file then opens up in Photoshop as a photoshop file.

Is this the best available way for me ?

Hi Phil. If you want to edit your CR2 file first in DPP then process the RAW further in PS7,
then that's fine, but probablly better to use just the one prog for RAW processing.
I adjust my CR2 files in DPP then save and convert them to 16bit Tiff, then I open them up in PSE for resizing/further tweaks, and save as a jpg for web use. I also save the final TIFF file for print.
Also, I find that using a memory card reader, files are transfered much quicker to the computer, it also saves you connecting the camera to the computer for image transfer.

Just pop your CF card in the reader,then copy files to a folder of your choice, then open DPP.

Hey Phil, that's how I do it with my D40 files, open in PictureProject, adjust any settings, then 'open with' photoshop. I can open them directly in PS, but I can only adjust the exposure.

I tried this earlier (got a card reader) by saving as Tiff then as jpg. Seems to work well but I was ending up with tiff files of 60MB

Is that normal ?

Yes, that's normal size for TIFF files Phil If you want the ultimate in print quality, then nothing less will do. Of course, if you are only printing small images, then a hi-res jpg will print just as good.

Good job I've just added 500 gig to my pc

I think I'll perhaps save tiffs for the rare occasion I get a really good picture and try an A3 print.
