Re: Taking, or making photographs?

For me personally, i used to do a lot of editing when i first started learning, but then thats because i didn't think i was that good at it... the majority of my work now is unedited and comes straight from the camera, although i sometimes play around with hue/saturation depending on the look i want... if i have done a people photo shoot, the only things i tend to edit are blemishes, wrinkles and spots on the skin, and i tend to just make the photo's look a little more professional looking, does that make me a bad photographer.....???

The stuff i do in photoshop i get to the style i want... its art at the end of the day so make what you want. I did some roses in photoshop, and it was commented on, but the style is always (well 95% of the time) intentional, but thats just my style.

Re: Taking, or making photographs?

In my opinion...

Light use of photoshop is perfectly acceptable. Especially in digital photography, as you don't always get an exact reproduction of what the eye see's. Sky's are a perfect example, and many images need sharpening to some degree anyway.

What if i put a gradient over my image and used it to correct sky colour? This can be acceptable because it's altering the photo no more than a filter on the lens would... The same goes for applying any effect that can be achieved using a cokin / hoya or any other filter...

cloning/stamping out an imperfection in a photo... Isn't this just a way of saving a usually wasted image? I do agree it can be over done though...

I think today's top photographers need to have pre and post production/shoot skills.

At the end of the day, Photoshop is great if used properly... the amount it should be used on an image depends what the image is to be used for.

Heavily photoshoped images are as previously said above... mostly art... even a form of modern art?

.... all in my opinion

Re: Taking, or making photographs?

I'm on the fence a bit with this one.

Personally I prefer the look of photographs that are 'normal' rather than those that have undergone massive amounts of post processing (pp).

Some functions on a camera allow 'effects' - white balance, ISO speed, shutter speed so you could argue that pp is simply a continuation of creating the finished image. Some people consider the pp stage NOT to be photography but if the same functions were in the camera/lens - would they think it was OK ?

I tend to 'revise' my pictures in photoshop if I think it improves them. Crop, contrast, dodge/burn, sharpen.

Although the quality of the original picture is still paramount I've no doubt digital photography / PP allows people to achieve 'better' end results than they are otherwise able to. This is great for the individual but must frustrate the people that would otherwise be better than your average Joe.

Fair comment Azz.

I have no problem whatsoever with people that do a lot of PS stuff, and if Im honest, as I have said, some of the effects I find wonderful. I raised the subject having read a few posts on this and other forums, I thought Id mention here too.

In the world of digital photography, picture taking is MASSIVE compared to years ago, I just think we are developing people who want to take pictures and people that want to develop them into something more, by way of editing. Its certainly no critisism on my part in any way, but an opinion based on whats around these days in comparison to years ago. Suppose its like everything really, things change, things move on and there will always be "Horses for courses"

Although I rarely comment on PS stuff, I always look at threads concerning it, and you will find if I like what there I will always say so.

Re: Taking, or making photographs?

Yes Phil, I agree with much of that also. I bought a polariser, I suppose you could say that it will alter the true photograph too.

Melody

I quote "A case could be made that those who rely tremendously on editing are not very good photographers"

No one said "crap" photographers or even anything against editing. I said a case ((( could))) be made etc.

Not that people who do a lot of editing ((((are ))) crap photographers. I was very careful in my wording so as not to offend anyone or have a go at anyone.

Maybe you should re- read my posting or read on further, as I did put a case for editing as well

All photography is art Art can be scuplture, collage, needlework, paint , line drawing, graphics ...

If you believe it isn't art then it is simply a recording device and nothing is acceptable surely? No sharpening, no dodging, no lightroom ..nothing As soon as you do ANYTHING to it, then it isn't as the camera saw it ...it may be what YOU saw ...but then we get back to art
