Wedding photography kit.

Hi Guys, was chatting to a fellow photographer the other day and we got on the subject of taking wedding pictures, I was telling him I had a couple of weddings this year and he asked what kit I was taking, when I showed him my camera, he asked where are your others? I replied that I only had one! He said he would never go to a wedding with only one camera! So my question to all of you that do weddings is, what kit do you take along?

Re: Wedding photography kit.

I belong to another forum with lots of pros.
All the wedding photographers there seem to have 2 cameras and they have something like the 5D mark II to be able to handle low light in the churches / reception venues.

You could always hire something for the weddings you shoot.

P.S. I love these photographers who do lots of weddings:

Re: Wedding photography kit.

I am shooting some weddings this year, starting in a couple of months, but only as a second shooter,(I'm not as brave as you)using my D300. I am planning on taking my 35mm,50mm, and I've decided to buy a 85mm soon, all good in low light and fast, I'm doing it for the experience and to add to my portfolio, as the thought of doing one on my own, is scary. and I want to be confident enough, that I can do the couple justice first. So,this seemed like a good way to try weddings.

TBH if I was shooting a wedding on my own, I would want a back up, if I didn't have one, I'd hire one. If your camera dies, you are stuckPlaces like lens for hire, and Calumet lease equipment.

Good luck , xxxx

Re: Wedding photography kit.

I think most pros take two bodies and a number of lenses and spare batteries - you don't want to be doing a wedding and your camera dies on you imagine how much you'd get sued for

Re: Wedding photography kit.

I do not cover weddings, just talked into a couple throughout my life, but togs I know who do would never go without at least two bodies and duplication of lens focal length (50mm + 24-105mm zoom) so if any item of equipment fails you can fall back on something else. Even flash guns are duplicated.

When I cover a field trial I have always got two bodies and usually three just in case of accidents or failures. This is not being flash or showing off when walking around with three sets of equipment strung around my body, just boots and braces approach.

If I only took one body and it failed I cannot say "stop all the proceedings whilst I get another body".

Re: Wedding photography kit.

Hi Eileen

I guess there's 'wedding photography' and 'wedding photography'.

For a friend - I'm more than happy to chip in with a few extra shots for a few quid but being the 'official tog' is a different thing all together.

Wedding photography is my idea of hell to be honest (sounds too much like work) but I certainly wouldn't feel happy taking it on without spare kit.

Thats a good point Phil.

Re: Wedding photography kit.

Thanks for all your answers guys! And yes "yes i do! I did believe you! But it did not hurt to ask the guys on here! lol, I'm doing the wedding next month as a wedding gift, the bride is my best friend and only wanted me to do the wedding, I have done some family portraits for her and a portfolio for her daughter, (posted some on here) so she was more than happy for me to do it! On this one Graham (Darrieboy) will be there too and he is taking his camera along, so this one is sort of covered! The one in August is the first one I will be getting paid for, the bride is a colleague and suspect she only asked me as she does not have a lot of money to spend on a photographer! She also has seen samples of my work and is happy with what she has seen. So I will be persuading Graham to lend me his camera as he not coming along!
