Finepix S5800

Hiya,

Have just bought one of these cameras and am slowing learning how to use it.

Wonder if anyone can help please? In particular we would like to take really good close up shots of stuff like jewellery and watches but finding it a little tricky even with the macro and super-macro lens, the diamonds don't show up as shining so much. With the flash they come out over-exposed. Any ideas?

Also, can anyone recommend a photo-editor that we could do stuff like erase backgrounds etc that doesn't cost the earth like Photoshop seems to?

Thanks!

Re: Finepix S5800

Hi Anne Marie!

I would try moving the object to natural light, such as near a window, and if the suns out, get some sunshine on it. This should prevent the flash from firing and you won't get the reflection/over-exposure.

Guess you're doing this anyway, but put the camera in macro mode. Sometimes, you may need to move a little further away (esp if the pics are coming out blurry).

See how that goes

With regards to photo editing, I use photoshop, but there are free editors like www.gimp.org that are worth a look

Re: Finepix S5800

As against removing backgrounds with an editing suite, why not just try differnt coloured backgrounds? for example anything black/blue etc will do, cloth /paper should do the trick.

Re: Finepix S5800

Hi thanks for your replies.

I think the natural light will help, thanks Azz.

Hi Bazza - we do put stuff in the background when taking pics of the jewellery etc, but I was interested in the likes of Photoshop for when you have things you'd like edited out of the background.

For photoeditor, I was thinking of things like when you take holiday pics at night and there is always someone in the background you'd like to edit out lol!! That's where I thought it could be helpful, does the gimp.org one do that?
