Peli case as hand luggage

Anybody taken a Peli case as hand luggage on an international flight? I have a couple of the cases, and one of them is supposed to be compliant with hand luggage, but have heard some stories of people getting to the check in and having to put their gear in the hold, which I don't want


The smallest one I have is the 1510, it's rollable, and has a handle, but it's very heavy.

Am thinking of investing in a Thinktank Airstream backpack, which would definitely go as hand luggage.

What do you use on flights? have you had any problems with your camera bag?

Haven't actually *been* anywhere that required a plane since I got my gear (it was either that or traveling - can't afford both!) so I have no help to offer I'm afraid. Was wondering though, is it safe to keep gear in the hold? :/

Well, I really don't want my gear out of my sight, which is why I want to take it as carry on luggage. My 1510 *should* comply with regulations, but need to double check with the airline, but it's very heavy.
I might be buying some new gear while away, and want to have a big enough bag to bring it home safely.

That looks fine to me but it's always worth checking with your airline. Also, they have cupboards which it might be able to go into? (but you might not be able to keep an eye on it)

Suzi, flown all over the place on scheduled flights and very rarely have I ever had my hand luggage weighed. I never give any indication my 'hand' luggage, usually a backpack with camera gear, ipod, laptop etc. etc. is heavy. One of my hand luggage backpacks was 20kg! However they do check size, and remember it is often only one piece of hand luggage and possibly a laptop bag, nothing else. Can't see what is wrong with a peli case if the size doesn't exceed max. inc handles etc. However, I do think peli cases are impractical except for the protection unless the foam is minimised. There is usually a lot of wasted space. A backpack such as a Lowepro AW Mini Trekker, even my Stealth 300 within something like a Cabin Max backpack which then has loads of extra space carries my D700 and several lenses.

Remember chartered flights for package holidays, some internal flights etc., RyanAir type budget comapnies are a different story. They impose strict and stingey restrictions, maybe only 5kg so they can charge for any breaches. Check first.

Don't know but think there is a weight limit on bags that are to be stored in the cabin lockers, long haul may have floor level lockers that can be booked but I don't know. All ways best to check because that way, with luck, you avoid problems on the day you travel.

I don't have the foam, mine, has the padded dividers, and the mesh lids compartments, so no real waste of space.

Looking at the airline specs, I would really be cutting it close as far as weight goes, 18kg and size.

Don't really like backpacks, so think the smaller roll-on Thinktank would be a good solution, or something along those lines, and then squish a smaller empty camera bag,in my main case.

Will have to have a good look online, what is available.

Cutting it fine is fine! It's either over or it's not! Only tip I would say is make sure you board quickly so you can get your bag in the locker before all the others get theirs in! Nearly wringed the neck of some arrogant chavster who just came along and moved my bag to fit his own in a year or two back.

I have never had my hand luggage weighed either and go on a plane 2 or 3 times a year.

It just sits on my back and te check in people just look at it.
