Re: A few of my birds and wildlife shots

Fantastic selection of subjects there Richard.

I'm guessing these are 'walkabout' shots in which case they're good.

If you can stack the odds in your favour and set something up so that they come to you, it will make a difference as you get to control the distance, background and direction of light

Even with a long lens these little birds need to be within 10 feet or so which given time they'll be happy to do given the right food and protection from predetors.

In terms of composition I always try to get them looking into the frame rather than having them dead centre. Often the distance means a little cropping is required so I just shoot with centre point focus and worry about composition afterwards.

As for the shots - I like how you've caught the Robin 'in song' and I'm very jealous of the Crossbill.

Re: A few of my birds and wildlife shots

You are correct Phil in that they are all taken whilst out and about. Mainly handheld but odd shot taken using Monopod. I'm afraid that my garden, although attracting a lot of birds, is not really suitable for setting up a feeding station, unless I set up a hide in the back garden! Also I am directly South facing so shooting from the rear windows means limited shooting due to the Sun. For the sake of garden views there is not too much vegetation close to the windows.
