Re: Old Chain

Some interesting shapes there - perhaps you could try increasing the contrast in it? Might make it really punchy!

Re: Old Chain

I think potentially for shapes and detail you have an interesting subject but I don't think as it stands this picture captures the artistic interest. Maybe it is worth seeing in colour, but I suspect it is a sort of gloss 'hammerite paint' black, maybe with a bit of rust, maybe not, as it doesn't look old.

Why doesn't it capture my interest? My eye wanders all over without settling. I am drawn to the interesting shape and detail on the right, but on the left it is just a mass of grey/black with nothing really happening. The footprint on the left doesn't feature in the image for any reason, and the foliage isn't cold, hard, mechanical like the intended object.

This could be an interesting little subject matter with the right lighting to pick out all the tones, detail and subtleties. You need some control over a strong directional light to pick out the detail, crop out the unnecessary and compose to try and lead the eye on a path into the picture. Overall it needs to be pin sharp as still life studies are, be it a f2.8 or f16. None of that costs money, just a bit more time to set it up. I think it would work in mono, however as others have said it may work in colour if there is rusty coloured bits in there, maybe the rivitted hinges. You could strike luck and see that item lit by early morning or eveing sun which is contrasty and warmer in tone and it could look really good. Just my tuppance worth.

Re: Old Chain

Just my opinion (which doesn't mean anything) but I like it in colour. I can see much more of the shapes and my eye is drawn to the light link.
