Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

Just wondered whether they are worth getting - or should I just get a tripod?

In which situations do each excel?

Re: Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

To be honest Azz depends on what you are after, with the 55-200mm you got you don't need a tripod really except for night stuff, and monopods in my opinion are only needed if you have really large lenses or pro level stuff.

Re: Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

I was thinking for night stuff - like the moon... guess I could use a mini bean bag tho

Although I guess I'd like to try some slow shutter speed shots too, perhaps of running water :-/

Re: Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

For that stuff matey, its tripod all the way. With long exposures like that the monopod isn't gonna cut it.

Monopod is more suited to action shots whether that be sport or wildlife when you have a mahoosive lens on the camera.

I agree azz...

IF you're doing anything with slow shutter speeds, you'll need the stability of a tripod.

Re: Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

Do you guys recommend any for the D40? (but hopefully one that would work with a d80/200/300 too perhaps).

They're mostly universal fittings... I'd go and try a few out... see what you feel comfortable with...

Re: Monopods good enough substitue for tripods?

Remember you can use a piece of string if you have neither a tripod or a monopod.
