Metering with canon 500d

Hi there, I've changed to canon from nikon, On my nikon i could select spot metering and move the dot around so i could select my exposure for sky etc, But on my canon i can select spot metering but have no say apart from the center to expose?? Is this right or am i doing something wrong?

Thanks Cliff

Re: Metering with canon 500d

Hi Cliff, I not to sure on your exact model, but on my Canon cameras there is an item in the menu somewhere that sets the spot metering to follow the active focal point.

Or you can press the AE"*" (star) button to lock the exposure of a give area of the scene and recompose and shoot, see below.

Quote:

AE/FE Lock / AF in Live View (Star button)
Press to trigger automatic exposure and lock the exposure for the next shot. Hold the button to lock the exposure for more than one shot. The exact function of this button can be set via C.Fn 10 (see below). In Live View this button is used to trigger auto focus.

Re: Metering with canon 500d

Hi cliff. Yours looks similar to mine.

Top right button. Press that and all the dots will light up. The used the scroll wheel to select what one you want.

Don't forget to put it back to all after use.
