Re: I have a couple of questions....sorry its long!

AS I said and Steve was pointing out you have to know the limitations of your camera.

Yes you can get sharp pictures of a running dog but the question is, how far away do you have to be to obtain it?

The closer the running dog is the faster a shutter speed has to be, and a much quicker focus. If the running dog is at some distance away you can get away with a slower shutter speed but the drawback is the dog will show up as a dot in the picture. So you start going onto zooming in instead. This means another set of skills to learn.

So what next? take loads of photos get to know what your camera can and can't do, it can take a lot of time to really understand a camera. It took me (being thick ) several months to understand a little of how and why I was getting good and bad results. The excellent pictures you see on here have had possibly years of the photographers experience and understanding of their camera.

Steve summed it up very well Quote " I do think you are trying run before you can walk and would slow down a bit and practice, practice, practice" unquote

If you post unedited photos on here we can check out the exif data and make some observations

I have to say I am not a big fan of compact (P/S) cameras anyway, there are too many limitations, yes they are ok for what they are and if satisfied with them all well and good.
Once gone onto a DSLR you start realising how much more you can develop photographic skills

Re: I have a couple of questions....sorry its long!

The big problem with photography is the more you learn the more there is to learn. You start off with snap shots great. But then comes understanding :- composition (rule of thirds)- light conditions- subject matter- flash photography- your camera settings-shot positions- unwanted object in photos etc etc. Thats not including even basic editing just for starters.
When you think you have an inkling of understanding, along comes a completely new rage of upgraded cameras and accessories to yearn for.

Thats a good point, not something that I would have thought of myself but now that you mention it, with the F10, even though it was much more basic, I did just know where to be, what settings..with this one (HS20) I really don't!

Yep, I think I need to start doing that then you can all see what I mean. (don't have cables on me just now/not at home)

I'd love a DSLR but I didnt feel I was ready for one, I can barely get to grips with a bridging camera and it would have meant a much bigger cost....but I do get what your saying.

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.
Basically I need to just calm down and practice!
